2018 Audi SQ5
Symphony in V6 Flat Out Major
By Ron Amadon
Herndon, Va. – Finally! A stretch of straight road with no one around.
The drive mode is in (very) dynamic, the right pedal is jammed to the floor and ohhhhhh myyyyyyy!
That Audi claim of a 0-60 in 5.1 seconds seems conservative as this 4,398 pound crossover leaps ahead with an exhaust note that would have Beethoven running back to his composing desk.
Symphony in V6 Flat Out Major indeed!
Now fun like this is supposed to be confined to Audi sedans and coupes. While the brand new S5 Sportback with a re-engineered 3.0-liter V6 that produces 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds will have you humming German beer hall music, the SQ5 will haul more stuff. (Yet, who says cars are dead? Not me.)
Here are the SQ 5 facts:
The S5 new eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is as well suited for the low-end torque of the new 3.0-liter turbocharged engine as beer is to a Bavarian stein. Paddle shifts? Of course!
A total of 354 hp @ 5,400 – 6,400 rpm
Torque: 369 lb-ft @ 1,370 – 4,500 rpm
Top track Speed of 155
EPA mileage of 19/24/21.
Quattro all-wheel drive is standard and handling, as could be determined in a short suburban drive, was excellent.
There are five different drive modes – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual and Offroad. SQ5 models can be equipped with the available sport adaptive air suspension also add a Lift/Offroad and Allroad mode. But as a fellow auto writer said, “no one is going to take this off road.”
Inside, the sporting nature continues with the three-spoke multifunction flat bottom sport steering wheel, and sport front seats with available contrast diamond stitching. It was very easy to quickly get comfortable in those chairs.
Fit and finish were first rate, and buyers have a choice of standard matte brushed aluminum inlays or carbon atlas inlays.
The SQ5 comes standard equipped with a power tailgate with hands free opening and closing.
One of the outstanding features of certain Audis is the virtual cockpit with its 12.3-inch display.
Three unique modes are available for viewing vital data: Classic, Infotainment, and on the SQ5 a Sport mode is added. So everything you want to know is right in front of you. Excellent!
Available for the first time in the Audi Q5 line, is a console mounted hand writing screen.
There was a head up display and for sounds, an available 19-speaker, 755-watt Bang & Olufsen system that would leave both Bang and Olufsen smiling.
Standard Audi smartphone interface for compatible devices provides Apple Car Play and Google Android Auto integration via USB connection.
Plus all the expected safety equipment with a base price of $54,300
Now you might enter an Audi showroom destined for the Q5 and an excellent choice it is.
But look yonder to the one with the platinum gray single frame grille with “aluminum optic double horizontal blade bars”, Audi’s term not mine.
It would be easier to look to the rear for the chrome SQ5 designation. Take one out. Take it home budget permitting. You will be glucklich. (Happy.)
For its marvelous performance, excellent handling, luxury interior, and outstanding build quality this is one of the greatest Crossover/SUV’s on the market.
Schon in German.
