Auto News for Jan. 18 – 2018 Mustang revealed

Behold the 2018 Mustang that will go on sale this fall. If you think it looks a lot like the 2017 that’s because it does. But there are changes. The 5.0-liter V8 is said to be more powerful and rev higher thanks to a new high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection, but Ford did not release horsepower figures. The 2.3-liter four carries over to the New Year, but 3.7-liter V6 has been dropped from the lineup. A new 10-speed automatic will be an option with both engines with “quicker shift times, better low-speed tip-in response and significantly reduced friction losses.” Inside is a new 12-inch all digital instrument cluster with different displays in normal, sport and track mode. Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and Driver Alert System are added safety features. It was rather unusual that Ford introduced the new Mustang three days after the Detroit show opened to the public.

U.S. auto sales set a record last year and European sales rose to a nine year high with Renault demand up 12 percent, the most of any manufacturer. The company was aided by a number of new models. VW continued as Europe’s top seller, but Renault jumped to second place, ahead of Peugeot – Citroen.

Mini’s largest vehicle, the Countryman is getting a 20 horsepower boost to 228 horsepower making it the most powerful engine offered by the brand. Kind of a maxi-mini. The John Cooper Works Countryman will post a 0-60 of 6.2 seconds the maker said with both the 6-speed manual and the optional 8-speed automatic. That is 0.8 to 0.9 seconds quicker than the previous model. The upgraded engine claims 258 lb-ft of torque, and comes with all-wheel drive, a sport suspension, and Brembo brakes. Mini said the new model will debut at the Shanghai show in April.

The 2017 BMW 3 series has improved from a marginal to a good rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety small overlap front crash test. Both the 3 series and the 2 series have improved headlights and earned the Top Safety Pick Plus rating.
