Various reports say GM is close to reaching an agreement with the Justice Department to settle criminal charges regarding its handling of faulty ignition switches. First reported by the Wall St. Journal, GM may face a $900-million financial penalty and settlement terms that could stretch over three years. The agreement may be announced later today.
The nation’s sixth best-selling vehicle just got a complete makeover. Honda has taken the wraps off the 2016 Civic that will go on sale this fall. It will be offered as a coupe, sedan, 5-door hatchback, plus Si and Type-R performance versions. Two new engines will be offered – a 2.0-liter four and a 1.5-liter turbo four matched with either a six speed manual box or a CVT. Performance figures were not announced. There are the usual safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control. Inside, there is a seven inch touchscreen, AppleCarPlay and Android Auto. You will have to move up to the EX trim level to get the 60/40 folding rear seats. Honda claims the Civic will have the “largest cabin in (the) compact class.”
Pennsylvania’s Insurance Commissioner said she will not approve auto insurance rate filings that contain the so-called “widow’s penalty.” Under this provision, a widow or widower can be charged a higher rate based solely on the change in his or her marital status. Commissioner Teresa Miller said insurance companies will have to provide statistical support for including widows and widowers in the higher single rate category.
Ford claims its 2016 Focus RS is the fastest RS ever with a 0-62 launch time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed for 165 mph. The high performance hatchback will appear on our shores next spring powered by a 2.-3-liter EcoBoost engine producing a projected 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Pricing will start at $36,605.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Sunriser is one slick looking off road vehicle with its matte orange paint, bumpers with a double tow hook on the front, a 4-inch suspension lift kit and half doors. It was displayed at the Frankfurt show.
