VW announced that a 2015 Golf TDI diesel had set a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption on a trip through the lower 48 states – 81.17 miles per gallon. It traveled 8,233.5 miles around the states in 16 days and used less than $300 worth of diesel fuel. It also topped the hybrid MPG vehicle record.

When it comes to used vehicles, sales of compact, midsize and luxury cars continue to fall, while sales of pickups and vans are on the rise, according to Manheim. Prices are about where they were a year ago, “in line with historic normalcies and market fundamentals…” the firm said. Manheim publishes the annual Used Car Market Report and helps both sellers and buyers of used vehicles to achieve their goals.

On the recall front, Honda has added 4.5 million vehicles to its Takata airbag recall, none of them in North America.

About 200,000 Hummers are being recalled by GM to repair a fan control that could overheat and has been linked to 42 fires and three minor burns, automaker said. Involved are 2006-10 H3 models of the Hummer and 2009-10 Hummer H3T models.

And roughly 140,000 model year 2015 Hyundai Sonatas are being called back to fix a problem with front seat belts that may not buckle properly.
