And what a way to start off this first day of press previews at the New York Auto Show than to present the latest McLaren, the 570S Coupe. This is the first offering in what McLaren calls its Sports Series and it features a mid-engine rear-wheel drive layout with a carbon fiber structure. Just in back of the driver is a 562 horsepower 3.8-liter V8 with 443 lb-ft of torque delivered through a seven speed transmission – rear drive only. McLaren cites a 0-62 run of just 3.2 seconds with a race track only top speed of 204 mph. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard. There are lots of interior trim options and a 12 speaker, 1,280 watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system. No word yet on price or when it be available.
Lower in price by a substantial margin is the lightweight Porsche Boxster Spyder being unveiled in NYC. It comes only with a manual transmission, and a 3.8 horizontally opposed six good for 375 horsepower and a 4.3 second sprint from 0-60. Prices start at $82,100.
Before we get lost in all this, let me remind readers that I will post a show update about noon Eastern with new car introductions and March auto sales results. There will be another NYC update in late afternoon. So do check back!!!
The 2016 Chevy Malibu will offer a hybrid powertrain with some of the tech stuff from the Chevy Volt and a GM claim of 47 mpg combined. The standard 1.5-liter turbo is projected at 37 mpg. For the 2016 model year, the Malibu is nearly 300 pounds lighter and rides on a close to four inch longer wheelbase. It will go on sale in the fourth quarter in four trim levels and an optional 2.0-liter 250 horsepower four mated to a new eight speed automatic.
Cadillac unveiled a new top-of-the-line model called the CT6, one of eight all new vehicles the brand will launch by the end of the decade. A new 3.0-liter Twin Turbo will offer an estimated 400 horsepower with 400 lb-ft of torque with a new eight speed automatic and “Active-on-Demand” all-wheel drive. A Surround View Video recording system can record front and rear views while driving, and 360 degrees of recording if the security system is activated. Good for catching perps. Cadillac said the car is structurally lighter and stiffer than any other similar vehicle such as the BMW 5-Series or the Audi A6 thanks in part to all-aluminum exterior body panels. Of course, there are lots of luxury touches inside. Production begins at the end of the year.
On top of the Gotham show, auto makers are releasing their March sales figures today.
Fiat Chrysler recorded its 60th consecutive month of year- over-year sales gains with an overall two percent increase. Jeep continues to do well with sales up 23 percent and demand was also strong for the Chrysler brands.
One of the smartest guys in the business just got a contract extension. Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche received a three year extension taking him through 2019.
